THE fear of losing Malay support and facing attacks from the opposition were key reasons Putrajaya decided not to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), said government sources.

These issues were discussed at the cabinet meeting yesterday where the Pakatan Harapan administration also wanted to reduce the ongoing tension and potential fallout arising from the ICERD issue.

  • PAS dan UMNO should cancell the rally. Conduct kenduri kesyukuran nationwide instead. Invite all rakyat dgn jamuan percuma disetiap negeri dengan ceramah to thanks rakyat for bringing PH goverment to their knees.

    • So using amok is right to threaten a government? Be sensible, I think these people need civic education more than anything.

    • Dr. Mahathir has got enough difficult issues to contend with, the economy, jobs, etc. He certainly didn't want another one added to his already full plate. With an eye on GE15 due by 2O23 he has previously said much earlier that Pakatan must have good results to show the voters. Antagonising his small Malay votes base with ICERD is not his priority?..

    • Too much is at stake. BAN THE RALLY & CORDON OFF DATARAN MERDEKA. Haul up Zahid and Hadi & warn them?..

  • The decision is not to ratify at present and not in the future. This is an acceptable compromise by the cabinet. If the Malays want to riot on 8 December 2018, that is their right. When the economy, currency and stock market collapses overnight they only have themselves to blame.
