US judge dismisses 40 MH370 suits

A US judge has dismissed 40 suits over Malaysia Airlines flight MH370’s disappearance, saying the case belongs in Malaysia instead of American courts.

Reuters reported that US District Judge Ketanji Brown ruled that Malaysia has an “overwhelming interest” in the aircraft’s disappearance on March 8, 2014 with 239 on board.

“At its core, this case is about the unexplained disappearance of a passenger plane operated by Malaysia Airlines as part of its national air carrier fleet following its departure from a Malaysian airport,” Reuters quoted her judgment as saying.

“Litigation in the United States related to the Flight MH370 disaster is inconvenient.”

MH370’s disappearance while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing is one of aviation’s greatest mysteries.

It was presumed to have crashed in the south Indian Ocean after flying off course and over Peninsular Malaysia, but no significant signs or wreckage of the plane has been found.

The suit sought to hold MAS, its insurer Allianz SE and aircraft manufacturer Boeing Co liable for the disaster. – November 24, 2018.
