Opposition politicians need permission to visit schools, says Maszlee

MEMBERS of the opposition wishing to visit schools are required to apply for permission from the Education Ministry. 

Minister Maszlee Malik said opposition politicians would be screened on topic and reason for visit before they were allowed to enter the school compound.

“We need them to make an application first as we want to inform them of the conditions and prerequisites (for a visit) before they go. We don’t want people to spread lies and hatred in school,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today. 

The Bersatu minister said Pakatan Harapan politicians were exempt as they attended school programmes to “explain government policies”

Maszlee said the new government was behaving fairly and professionally by giving the opposition a chance to apply for permission, unlike Barisan Nasional, which had imposed an outright ban on the opposition in schools. 

“Being barred is different from being required to ask for permission. Back then, we were not even allowed to ask for permission. We were blacklisted. 

“Now they can ask for permission but we must explain to them our conditions and prerequisites. We are being professional,” he said.

Yesterday, Jerai MP Sabri Azit of PAS said he was not allowed inside the government schools in his constituency. 

Before the 14th general election, several ministers had visited schools to campaign and reinforce support for BN.  – November 19, 2018.

  • Set the rule that no politicians, ruling or opposition, are allowed to talk politics in schools, only to grace the occasions with speeches to uplift the education.
