AN Umno MP has accused Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P. Waytha Moorthy of riling up the Malays by lobbying for the government to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).
Umno’s Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said Waytha Moortha had spread fear among the Malays by insisting that Malaysia signed the treaty.
At a Umno-PAS unity rally last night in Pasir Salak in protest of ICERD, Tajuddin urged Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad not to allow himself to be used by non-Muslim government officials.
“This minister named Waytha Moorthy is the one who started the problem, and the reason why we are gathered here today to oppose ICERD,” said Tajuddin.
“This Indian minister must be sacked from the cabinet. Tun Mahathir, don’t be taken for a ride by DAP and non-Muslims.
“We know Pakatan Harapan’s win in GE14 is due to support from the non-Malays but the Malays in PH must come back to their senses. If not, we (the Malay race) will suffer.”
Waytha Moorthy announced in October that Malaysia would ratify ICERD and five other treaties in the first quarter of next year.
On November 1, however, the prime minister said Malaysia would only sign the convention after consulting with all the ethnic groups in the country.
Umno, PAS and some PH leaders have expressed concern that ratification of ICERD would erode Malay rights as enshrined in the federal constitution.
Earlier this week, Waytha Moorthy said the government would not abolish Article 153 of the federal fonstitution in favour of ICERD.
“The government has no intention to abolish Article 153. I also want to state that as a lawyer, (I find that) there is no discrimination involved and that the special position of the Malays and natives, including those in Sabah and Sarawak, is safeguarded and protected.
“The government gives assurance that Article 153 of the federal constitution will not be abolished,” he said.
Tajuddin yesterday said the Malays had never discriminated against the other races even though they were immigrants.
“When have we discriminated against the other races in Malaysia? We have been very kind to them by giving them privileges.
“Malay-Muslims – we are the ones who have been left behind.
“The economy is in their hands. The Indians have come out of the estates and become professionals such as doctors and lawyers. But we are still farmers. And the government aid for farmers have been reduced in Budget 2019,” said the Umno Supreme Council member known for his controversial pro-Malay statements.
He warned that the Malays would no longer tolerate being insulted and sidelined by the government. – November 18, 2018.
