THE country’s two biggest Malay political parties, Umno and PAS, will hold a joint protest against Malaysia’s plan to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).
The protest to be held in Kuala Lumpur on December 8 was confirmed tonight by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Perak PAS commissioner Razman Zakaria at a unity gathering (Himpunan Perpaduan Ummah) in Pasir Salak, Perak tonight.
Razman said PAS agreed to the joint rally as a meeting of its central leadership earlier today.
Zahid also said Umno would support such a move.

Some Muslim groups have expressed concerns about Putrajaya’s intention to ratify the ICERD on grounds that it will undermine constitutional provisions that protect the special position of the Malays and will bring an end to affirmative action policies.
Some have also argued that the convention is based on western norms that will not be accepted by Malaysia.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has said the government would hear the views of all races on ICERD before ratifying it. – November 17, 2018.
