A MUSLIM group has threatened to call a protest if the authorities fail to take action against those behind the alleged distribution of Bibles at a Penang school.
Jemaah Fisabilillah Pulau Pinang, an organisation associated with Muslim welfare group Pekida, said it will also seek an audience with the Agong if the matter is not dealt with.
“They now dare to go to schools to circulate (Bibles). Jemaah Fisabilillah is issuing a stern warning. We will take action if the issue is not resolved,” one of the group’s leaders, Mohd Nasir Md Ali, told a press conference in Bukit Mertajam this afternoon.
The issue hit the headlines earlier this month when a post, alleging that Bibles were being distributed in front of a school in Bukit Mertajam, went viral on social media.
Police have received eight reports in Penang and other states over the incident, and recorded statements from 29 people, including six suspects, and the school’s principal, staff and students.
No arrests have been made.
Central Seberang Prai district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid recently said the Christian materials distributed have been taken from students and handed over to the school administration.
He said police will refer its investigation to the public prosecutor for further action.
Another leader from Jemaah Fisabilillah, Mohd Foad Mat Isa, said the distribution of Bibles must be stopped, and the authorities need to remind the public that Islam is the country’s official religion.
“We just want the authorities to take care of the religion.
Following the Bukit Mertajam incident, there were complaints on five Nigerians who allegedly distributed a Christian magazine, Rhapsody of Realities, in George Town. The five were arrested and found to not have valid travel documents.
Last week, it was reported that some residents in Taman Kuala Bekah, Penaga, Penang, found Christian leaflets in their letterboxes.
Religion remains a sensitive issue in Malaysia, where it is an offence to propagate other faiths to Muslims. – November 16, 2018.
