PAS vice-president Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah today urged the government to establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to unearth the truth of the Memali incident.

Amar said there had been many speculations and accusations regarding the incident as there was no transparent investigation into the incident by authorities.

“We believe an RCI can resolve many issues and disperse false assumptions and accusations… that’s what’s important. Once and for all… it (RCI) can resolve this issue,” he told reporters after attending the Kelantan government’s signing of the anti-corruption pledge today.

The signing was attended by Kelantan Mentri Besar Ahmad Yakob, members of the Kelantan state executive council and Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Dzulkifli Ahmad.

Amar said Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s unsatisfactory answer on a question regarding the Memali incident during the Nothing To Hide 2.0 forum in Shah Alam on Sunday caused the ensuing fracas.

The incident on November 19, 1985 saw 18 dead, including four policemen, and many more injured when police attempted to detain Ibrahim Mahmud, a religious teacher also known as Ibrahim Libya.

When asked about Dr Mahathir’s flip-flop on Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy conviction, Amar said the former prime minister must openly apologise to Anwar if he had admitted that it was a false charge.

“If it is true that the charge was false, then I think Dr Mahathir should issue an open apology as the incident humiliated Anwar and his family, this is not a small issue… it’s a national issue, perhaps even global,” he said. – Bernama, August 16, 2017.
