AMANAH is opposed to Malaysia ratifying the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) because the terms of the treaty violated the federal constitution.

Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub said Malaysians should safeguard the harmony, equality and livelihoods enjoyed by all the races in the country.

“Anything that is contravenes the country’s constitution and culture, we cannot accept. We have our own system. What is contained in the constitution has to be safeguarded.

“Currently, i think many will not ratify it (ICERD) and there are matters that have to be looked into thoroughly. We have to defend what we think is required for the country,” he told reporters after the  Bicara Minda bersama Menteri Pertanian dan Industri Asas Tani” programme at Dewan Karangkraf here today.

On October 26, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P. Waytha Moorthy was reported to have said that Malaysia would ratify the ICERD and five other treaties on human rights as early as the first quarter of next year.

However, on October 31, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Malaysia would only ratify ICERD after all the races had been consulted, while admitting it was not an easy decision to make because Malaysia was made up of various races. – Bernama, November 13, 2018.

    • Is the ICERD treaty a law? Not that I know of. It is only a convention - a practice which becomes accepted through usage? So then ICERD cannot violate the Constitution because the latter is the supreme law of the land, while a treaty is not law? ANY OTHER VIEWS TO HELP CLEAR THIS MUDDLE?..

  • ICERD itself when has it violate Malaysian constitution. It is the other way round and the constitution write up has been exploited and abused that contravenes all what ICERD stands for. Do not defend what is improper. Seems that the Malay race be it in Umno , PAS, Amanah ,PKR and even in DAP are fixated in the special rights of Article 153 without understanding in totaity the holistic applications. Do not bother to declare about New Malaysia as a Developed Country status where lopsided and myopic view of preferences by race definition are still practises and not by needs irrespective of color and creed. Nobody is against the the needys to be fully supported but against racial discrimination. So tell me logically on the irony on how can majority who rules cries out that they racialy discriminated and deny of subsistence?????

  • A shocking betrayal by Amanah for short term Malay support. Show us how is ICERD contrary to the Constitution. If it was, why was it included in the PH manifesto which all 4 parties endorsed?

    • Hasn't even Najib (ex-PM) himself been harping on the Pakatan govt on the issue that manifesto promises must be kept? He possibly even agrees with ICERD?..

  • Does Islam preach racism? Why are these so-called Islamic parties against the ICERD? Perhaps it is because they are in reality Malay-superiority rather than Islamic parties.
