ARAU MP Shahidan Kassim today claimed trial at the Kangar sessions court to a charge of molesting a 15-year-old girl last month, and has been released on a RM25,000 bail with two sureties.
He was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, for physical sexual assault on a child by touching any part of the child’s body.
The incident allegedly took place at Tuanku Syed Putra Stadium in Kangar about 11.30pm on October 20.
He was allowed to keep his passport. The case is up for remention on January 8 next year.
The court also set aside an arrest warrant issued against the former minister in the Prime Minister’s Department on November 9 after he failed to appear in court to face the molestation charge.
Shahidan, who is former Perlis menteri besar, previously claimed that he was unaware he had been summoned to appear in court.
The alleged victim is said to be a member of a buskers’ group sponsored by Shahidan.
He has denied the molestation claim, saying it stemmed from a “misunderstanding”, and that the police report lodged against him had been withdrawn.
The former Perlis Umno chief arrived at court about 8.20am today. He was seen using a walking stick, and was accompanied by his wife and two unidentified women.
A small group of supporters greeted Shahidan upon his arrival. – November 12, 2018.
