Govt mulls mechanism to compel divorced Muslim men to pay alimony

THE government plans to introduce a mechanism to ensure Muslim men pay alimony to their ex-wives, as decided by the shariah court.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa said this is aimed at helping women with irresponsible ex-husbands.

He said the mechanism will enable the Shariah Judiciary Department to claim from the men’s Employees Provident Fund or bank accounts, to pay alimony to their ex-wives after the shariah court rules on the matter.

He said the department’s Family Support Division (FSD) will give these men a grace period of six months after the court decision to pay their ex-wives.

“If the women still do not get the alimony, legal action will be taken against their ex-husbands.

“I will meet with FSD tomorrow to discuss the matter, to ensure it is standardised in all states,” he told reporters after meeting farmers in Tg Piandang near Parit Buntar yesterday. – Bernama, November 12, 2018.
