THE Pakatan Harapan government will not breach any articles in the Federal Constitution in the ratification of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).

Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin said the government was in no hurry to ratify the ICERD as the matter had to be thoroughly scrutinised so as not to violate Article 153, the constitutional monarchy system, the status of Islam and all the special rights enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

“Malaysia is a country of multiple races, religions and cultures, and the Malaysian way of life is different from other countries. What matters most to us is to maintain the good ties, as well as peace and harmony, among all the races in the country,” he said after visiting the Pagoh Higher Education Hub in Muar today.

With him were Education Minister Maszlee Malik and Johor Menteri Besar Osman Sapian.

The development of HPTP on a 400ha site was implemented in phases since 2012. It now houses four campuses of public varsities, namely Universiti Tun Hussien Onn, International Islamic University Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Tun Syed Nasir Syed Ismail Polytechnic.

Muhyiddin said Bersatu had also received input from its members who shared their concerns that ICERD ratification would bring about negative impacts on the country.

“From the feedback we received, a majority of members disagreed,” he said.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said that Malaysia would only ratify ICERD after negotiations with all races and that it was not an easy matter because Malaysia was a country of many races, each with their own interests.

Meanwhile, Muhyiddin, who is also home minister, said at least one bill to amend or abolish the law under the purview of his ministry would be tabled at the Parliament before year-end.

He said the laws included the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012, Prevention of Crime Act 1959, Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, Sedition Act 1948 and those involving the death penalty.

“A committee has been set up to carry out a review on all these acts to determine what should be amended or abolished.” – Bernama, November 11, 2018.

  • Such a simple concerns and yet being made difficult by mainatining a racist outlook. Here ICERD are not talking about revoking or doing away the recognition on those who are in needs of aids but more towards racial discrimination. If ICERD is viewed with extreme suspicions and in the guise of constitutional rights to hold and perpetuate the "Ketuanan", tell me how are you guys going to maintain peace, harmony and unity within all races. Looks like the majority are claiming that they are being shackled by poverty and mandatory for minority group to continue providing supports to ensure no disruptions of the entitlement in place In being protective of a majority rights is already a balant controversy to ICERD principle. Not recognising the basic set up of human rights and equality is akin a to upholding "apartheid" practises in a reverse form .

    • I read today that a Malay husband of a baby-sitter is suspected of causing the death of a baby girl under her care, by raping, sodomising, & physically abusing her. It also appears that Malays are more prone than other races for having a propensity to indulge in sexually bad behaviour? Are Malays more sexual as a people? If the statistics are true then it is time that Malaysians come together and agitate for corrective action to help improve this difficult situation, instead of just being noisy on social media now and then and let the matter pass. Until the next serious episode occurs to someone's detriment. I have read that today an elderly (MP) politician who is also a former mentri besar of Perlis has to answer a summons in court for allegedly molesting a 15-year old girl by holding her hand and then touching her shoulder after inviting her into his car, causing her to run out crying? Perhaps he simply meant it as a fatherly gesture, but incorrect all the same?..

    • I am puzzled by what you write . What has it got to do with ICERD. Basically the two incidents of sexual perversion is a traits and very rampant in the Malay race as what you wrote. I believe this stamps out from bad upbringing (directly not due to poverty ) and wrong teaching . Worst part is the Perak approving in making Polygamy easier for muslim males all in the guise of religion conditions. It is indirectly approving sex perversion legally. Too much of unneccessary prohitions induce the natural act of man in challenging the taboos which are man made by religion. Halal it thru by reconditioning it into facilitated laws do not right the situation but adverse in effect and compounded the situation.

  • 60 years of greatness, did it do anything good? Very much the opposite isn't it?
