DEPUTY Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has denied that her visit to Julau, Sarawak, ahead of PKR’s party elections in the state had any underlining motive.

The women, family and community development minister said following the original schedule of the party elections, she was meant to arrive at Julau after voting had concluded.

“I went there after the election but coincidentally, it was postponed.

“That is all that had happened. I didn’t go there to campaign. I’m also not contesting (for the deputy president post),” she said after visiting Sekolah Tunas Bakti in Sungai Besi.

The PKR president was responding to PKR central committee member Latheefa Koya’s statement slamming the visit as “inappropriate and highly questionable” as it comes a week before party elections in the state.

Dr Wan Azizah said that there was nothing wrong with her being present in Julau, as she went there to see the people as part of her official government duties.

“This is an opposition state, so the federal government should show that we care and provide for the people regardless of any discrimination,” she told reporters today.

When asked if she went there to campaign for Rafizi Ramli, who is gunning for the position of deputy to her husband and party president Anwar Ibrahim, Wan Azizah said that she was not involved in any campaigning.

The Julau division has 13,000 members, among the largest membership in Sarawak PKR, making it a possible kingmaker in the party elections.

Sarawak, which is the final state to vote, will kick off polling this Saturday.

Julau has also been the subject of controversy over its sudden surge in new members ahead of the poll.

The PKR polls have been mired in controversy since they started on September 22, including over alleged technical sabotage and poor Internet connections.

The polls are being held using an e-voting system.

Over the weekend, trouble broke out during polling in Keningau, Sabah, with Rafizi alleging that he was assaulted during a ruckus between his and supporters of Mohamed Azmin Ali, who is defending the No. 2 post. – November 8, 2018.

  • Very convenient. Why visit Julau now? Why was no other place in Malaysia important to visit to bring development? She is very clearly out to push Azmin and all his allies out of PKR. She is stupid to think Malaysians are fools and cant see this

  • As a political party PKR is becoming a joke. From the Kajang move until now back stabbing is the most important past time of some of PKR leaders. They do not need BN people to destroy them. There are enoguh 'time bombs' among the PKR leaders to do this job effectively. Just imagine Koya questioning the motive of Wan Azizah's visit to Sarawak. A good leader is one who has been a good follower. I am beginging to lose faith in PKR.

  • There must be reasons why DSAI, DWA and Nurul Izzah support Rafizi. They see that only Rafizi can ensure and push for DSAI to be the PM, not Azmin. Rafizi is a fighter, not Azmin. Azmin has no interest to do so as he himself wants to be PKR no.1 and finally PM. So those who were not happy or disagreed with DWA visit to Julau are those who support Azmin and those who dont want DSAI to be the next PM.
