FORMER prime minister Najib Razak can still draw a crowd, despite being charged over the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.

Najib, who held a tea session today at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur, said that he wanted to clear the air on the accusations and “lies” hurled against him by Pakatan Harapan.

Akash, a training and development consultant, said that depsite the bad press Najib has received, he could still command support and adoration.

“It’s eye-opening to see so many people turning up and it is commendable, no matter why it is they came.

“We can see that he still has a fervent following, judging by the crowd,” he told The Malaysian Insight.

About 1,000 people packed the Dewan Tun Hussein hall this evening to hear the Pekan MP speak.

The former Umno president faces 38 counts of criminal breach of trust, money laundering and misuse of power over the 1MDB scandal.

Aksah, however, said it was difficult to gauge whether Najib truly had much support across the country, especially as much reported about him in the media of late has not been positive.

“In any case, we have to balance what we have read and what he said at the talk.”

Zawiah Abdullah, 60, from Malacca, who came with a group of friends, said this was a good platform for Najib to explain his situation.

“We are not happy with the current administration, which has promised many things but hasn’t delivered.

“If they were good leaders, we would accept it, but (the situation) is only getting worse. Their Budget 2019 is nonsense and doesn’t help the youth or senior citizens,” she said.

She said the current administration’s ministers were also not up to par.

“Especially the Youth and Sports Minister (Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman), who likes to shoot his mouth off without thinking.”

Aisah Abdullah, 69, from Kampung Batu Muda, Kuala Lumpur, said she was happy with Najib’s explanation and came away from the session with less faith in Pakatan.

“I don’t have a pension or EPF account and the government has scrapped the 1Malaysia People’s Aid.

“The aid Najib gave was not dedak but to help the people,” she said.

Consultant Faizal Aziz, 48, from Johor, said that it was crucial for the people to know about the accusations against Najib.

“The crowd here shows that people want to know what is going on with Najib.

“We can see that he has a lot of support from the people.

“So this platform was good way for him to explain himself.” – November 3, 2018.

  • He is a good orator, a good influencer... and these are simple people who are easily influenced. When Jibby talks only about the shortcomings of the present government, while remaining silent about 1MDB and all the charges, people are easily swayed.. Lets see when this goes to court..

  • The PH government must learn from the outcome of this tea party by Jibby.. Never take anything for granted.. Study what is happening to the people in your constituencies, continuously engage with them so that you address their needs as well gain their confidence..
Before you know it, GE15 will be underway and it will be too late to then start garnering for support.

  • These people must be dumber than they look. The budget has allocated billions for youth and the BSH is retained for those whose household income is up to RM4k ler month. What more to they want? Like Najib they still think that Cash is King. Till they go to the grave they will still remain in the poverty trap.

    • And the Malay people can generally be said to be forgiving in nature, seldom holding grudges for too long? And quite willing to overlook transgressions?..

    • I remember before 2O16 when news broke in the media about the problems faced by the homeless in KL who depended on and received food packets and drinks served by our several charity soup kitchens like Kechara, Pertiwi, etc and unknown or unpublicised small groups of donors, Najib went down to the ground late one night to see them to find out their problems. Out of his visit was born the sanctuary for homeless people that you can see across the road almost opposite our KL Hospital entrance in Jalan Pahang. They get to sleep at night in dormitory-like bunk beds, eat, & wash their clothes. Pakatan govt can further enhance & improve this facility, & open similar, govt or local authority funded homes in other towns. After all they are also voters..

  • The lady at 69 with no pension or EPF surely is the reason why the previous government had to be changed. Nobody to blame but BN for failing so many pensioners. But they blame PH for promises not fulfilled aftef only a few months in office. Theres really no hope for some folk if they believe one again Najibs lies about the mess he left behind.
