THE plan for Anwar Ibrahim to take over as prime minister in two years is still on, said Dr Mahathir Mohamad today.

He said there are no changes to the succession plan, reiterating that the PKR president-elect will take over from him as previously agreed on by Pakatan Harapan parties.

Dr Mahathir said he will not hold on to the post, unless Anwar consents to it.

“Nothing has changed. I’m here for two years.

“I don’t know if he (Anwar) will consent to 2½ years or more,” the prime minister told reporters after chairing a PH presidential council meeting at the Perdana Leadership Foundation in Putrajaya today.

The PH chairman said he will not go back on his word to resign in two years’ time.

“My promise is that I will step down. I will keep my promise. I have always kept my promise.

“I’m the only dictator who will resign.”

Asked if there is animosity between him and Anwar, Dr Mahathir cheekily air boxed the latter.

“I wanted to fight him, but he smiled instead. We have no problem. The media is the problem,” said the prime minister with a smile.

Dr Mahathir has repeatedly said the succession plan is on track, and Anwar has reiterated that he will give room to the former to lead, following claims that the plan would be derailed.

Dr Mahathir, during his first tenure as prime minister, had fired Anwar as his deputy in 1998, and had the latter tried and jailed for sodomy and corruption. – November 3, 2018.

  • Did Dr. Mahathir give a very broad hint by saying "2 and a 1/2 years" (or more ), meaning that ongoing matters may require him to stay as PM a bit longer? If he steps down he will busy himself building up his party, Bersatu (PPBM) to make forays for Pakatan to capture Sarawak in its state elections due by 2O21. It has been reported that the GPS state govt is going to spend all of the state reserves of RM3O billion to woo Sarawakian voters to try & hang on to the govt..
