SELANGOR Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali is takng Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar to court to compel him to arrest Malaysian financier Low Taek Jho linked to the 1Malaysian Development Bhd scandal.

Azmin said his lawyers today filed for a judicial review in the nature of a mandamus commanding the IGP to take all steps necessary to locate and apprehend Low to face criminal charges.

“This action is to force the IGP to carry out his duties and responsibilities which are stated in the police act. He has to investigate the suspect who has committed the offences.

“This is not a personal attack at the IGP but as a Malaysian, I want to ensure that the IGP takes action,” he said at the lobby of the Kuala Lumpur High Court.

Khalid had last week told Azmin to proceed with legal action as he would not bow to pressure to arrest Low.

Azmin had sent a notice of demand two weeks ago to Khalid seeking the arrest of Low who has been described as the main conspirator in the 1MDB scandal.

Azmin’s lawyer Latheefa Koya said the notice sought to compel the IGP to seek the help of Interpol in the arrest and extradition of Low, failing which Azmin would take legal action to ensure same.

Azmin today said he had given the IGP ample time to have Low arrested and brought back to Malaysia.

“Unfortunately, the IGP has responded by saying that he will see me in court. I have no choice but to initiate this action so that the court will order a mandamus directive against the IGP.

“I hope that this process will be carried out swiftly because the IGP had allegedly said that this issue (1MDB) is still under investigation.

“This I cannot accept, because the whole world has seen who are linked to the 1MDB problems but Malaysia is still carrying out investigations.”

Azmin said that if it was true that Malaysian police was carrying out investigations, Low must be brought back to Malaysia to be questioned. – August 14, 2017.
