THE Health Ministry has yet to verify that the country’s gay population stands at 310,000, said the senior assistant director of the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia’s (Jakim) Family, Social and Community Unit.

Dr Mohd Izwan Md Yusof said Jakim remains committed to helping members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, especially homosexuals, who want to reform, by providing information and counselling.

“Jakim is committed to educating them through seminars and camps,” he said in a statement sent via WhatsApp today.

He said the department urges the public to work together, to strengthen the family institution and monitor children, as well as provide religious education.

Yesterday, Jakim revealed that the number of gays in Malaysia is estimated to be 310,000, up from 173,000 five years ago. – Bernama, October 30, 2018.
