ELEMENTS of sabotage are suspected in the PKR elections in Kuala Selangor division today after a device believed to be a communications jammer was found at the voting venue.
Polling in the division was forced to be adjourned to another day after party members could not vote using the new e-voting system due to slow internet connection.
A police report was lodged at the Kuala Selangor police station at 2.40pm following the discovery of the jamming device, which party members believed caused the internet connection to slow down.
The report was made by party member Sabah Bathi Raja Linggam who said the device was discovered by workers at the Kuala Selangor Indoor Stadium, the venue for the voting.
“We find this to be very strange. After the polling was cancelled, I was still around to help undo the tents and canopies. At that time, the stadium employees told me that they have discovered the mystery device.
“This is an act of sabotage. I hope the police will investigate this matter,” said the candidate for post of the division’s youth wing chief.
Meanwhile, PKR’s election steering committee (JPP) member in charge of the polls in the Kuala Selangor division was surprised when asked about the jamming device.
“I was not told of anything. I don’t even know what a jammer is. Nothing suspicious happened here since morning,” said Roswari Bahrin when contacted.
Kuala Selangor police meanwhile said they were investigating the matter to see if the device actually worked as a mechanism to disrupt internet connectivity.
Earlier today party members had complained that the election process was very slow due to poor internet connection for the e-voting system.
The Kuala Selangor division has 13,727 members. Many of them have started queuing at the Kompleks Sukan Kuala Selangor since 9am to vote.
However, with the delays, polling was eventually called off by noon. The JPP will now fix another date for repolling.
PKR election director Rashid Din confirmed the calling off of voting in Kuala Selangor due to “failure of telecommunication signal”.
Previously, polling in several divisions in Kedah and Malacca were also marred by poor internet connection. – October 28, 2018.
