PAS should stop twisting the facts and face the reality of the Kelantan government’s financial situation, said Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Steven Sim.
He said the official records showed the state’s financial performance, and PAS should not twist the facts of the state’s management of its funds.
“From 2012 until 2016, Kelantan suffered a RM1.1 billion financial deficit. At the same time, the government’s debts have increased every year.
“The total debt owed by the state government as for 2016 stands at RM1.4 billion,” Sim said in a statement today.
The state’s financial deficit in 2012 was RM244 million, RM253 million in 2013, RM190 million in 2014, RM210 million in 2015, and RM181 million in 2016.
Public debt in 2012 was RM1,175 million, RM1,233 million in 2013, RM1,294 million in 2014, RM1,355 million in 2015, and RM1,396 million in 2016.
This year, the state government could only repay RM3.94 million, or 1% of the total RM395.83 million it needs to settle this year.
“This means the state government still owes RM392 million for 2016,” Sim said.
“Let the people decide on the state’s financial performance. I hope PAS will stop denying what is really happening and stop blaming others on the matter and face the truth.
“The state government needs to change to better manage, be accountable for, and be transparent about their funds for the sake of Kelantan’s people,” said the Bukit Mertajam MP.
On Thursday, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said Kelantan is the largest debtor and recipient of assistance from the federal government.
The government had transferred RM22.5 million in August to pay for Kelantan’s public servants’ wages.
He said that contrary to the statement by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, the federal government had never considered Kelantan a “beggar”. – October 28, 2018.
