MOHAMED Nazri Abdul Aziz has been named Barisan Nasional’s new secretary-general.
The Umno Padang Rengas MP said the coalition’s chairman, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, told him about the appointment three months ago.
“I suppose it took some time for the announcement to be made. He told me earlier he would announce it at the Umno assembly but he appeared to have changed his mind,” he told The Malaysian Insight today.
Zahid instead announced the appointment at MIC’s annual general assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.
Nazri began his career in BN’s lynchpin party Umno in the 1970s as a member of its Youth wing.
“I was inducted into the Youth wing by its then chief, Suhaimi Kamaruddin. There were not that many Malay lawyers in Kuala Lumpur and he said I should be in the Youth wing,” Nazri had said in a previous interview.
The colourful former tourism, culture and arts minister rose through the ranks to eventually join the federal cabinet for the first time as entrepreneur development minister in 1995.
Nazri said he was looking forward to his new duties as Umno secretary-general.
