POLICE are unable to reopen investigations into the death of Teoh Beng Hock as they have yet to receive any instructions from the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) , said Inspector-General of Police Fuzi Harun.

“We have not received any instructions from the Attorney General’s Chambers,” Fuzi told reporters when asked for updates on when the case would be reopened.

Yesterday, Teoh’s family lawyer Ramkarpal Singh appealed to Home Minister Muhyddin Yassin to instruct police to reopen investigations into Teoh’s death.

“If the police have yet to do it, I appeal to Muhyiddin, as the home minister, to instruct them to do so immediately,” the Bukit Gelugor member of parliament said in a statement.

However, Muhyiddin said today that all matters related to the investigation and whether or not it would be reopened would have to come from the AGC.

“It’s still in the hands of the AGC, whatever decision made must come from the attorney-general’s chambers, whether it is to reopen investigations and so on,” he said.

Ramkarpal had also suggested the formation of a royal commission of inquiry to investigate Teoh’s death, based on the Court of Appeal’s ruling that there were elements of foul play and that there was a possibility that Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) personnel were involved.

Teoh was the political secretary to former Selangor exco Ean Yong Hian Wah. He was found dead on July 2009 at the fifth floor of the MACC office in Selangor after being interrogated for 111 hours throughout the night by MACC officials.

Ramkarpal said he had written a letter to the attorney-general in July, requesting for the case to be reopened.

He said the AGC had recommended that further investigations be conducted into Teoh’s death and that the department would issue a letter to the police chief to take necessary action. – October 25, 2018.
