THE National Council of Professors (MPN) will not be dissolved as earlier announced by the Pakatan Harapan government, but will now operate as a civil society body with the freedom to engage with any party or stakeholder.
Shortly after taking over Putrajaya, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the new government would disband MPN, which had been criticised as serving as a mouthpiece for the Barisan Nasional administration, rather than promoting knowledge and nation-building.
However, MPN deputy chairman Shamsul Amri Baharuddin said the council, which groups 1,426 members from different public universities, could not be dissolved as it was registered as a company.
“MPN will not and cannot be disbanded as it is registered as a company with the guarantee under the Companies Act 2016,” Shamsul told The Malaysian Insight.
The role of the revamped MPN would be to support government and private academic groups, Shamsul said.
“MPN does not only operate for the government, but also for other public bodies, civil society groups, academic and non-academic groups in Asean, as well as internationally.
“The old structure remains for now, and if any amendment is needed, it will be done upon the consensus of members.”
A month after Dr Mahathir’s announcement, MPN members met the prime minister to present a “restructuring plan” for the academic group.
Apart from MPN, other bodies slated to be dissolved after BN was overthrown included the Special Affairs Department (Jasa), Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) and the Federal Village Development and Security Committee (JKKKP), as they were deemed to be political in nature. – October 27, 2018.
