ANWAR Ibrahim will be the next prime minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad reiterated at a forum in Shah Alam today.
“It is my promise that when I resign, the next prime minister will be Anwar if Malaysians wish it,” said the 93-year-old prime minister.
“I will go eventually and there must be a replacement,” he told a forum moderated by Johan Jaafar and organised by Malay-language daily Sinar Harian today.
However, Dr Mahathir joked that he could not guarantee whether Anwar was the best man for the job as he had a track record of picking poorly.
“I cannot guarantee anything.”
Anwar, 71, is to succeed Dr Mahathir in two years’ time under an agreement between all Pakatan Harapan parties.
However, Dr Mahathir has had to repeat several times that the agreement still stands, while Anwar has also reiterated that he will give room to the prime minister to lead following speculation and claims of conspiracies that the succession plan would be derailed.
The two men were formerly enemies when Dr Mahathir fired Anwar as his deputy in 1998 and had him tried and jailed for sodomy and corruption. – October 22, 2018.
