SAUDI journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s killing is cruel and cannot be condoned, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today.
“We also have people that we don’t like but we don’t murder them. People also didn’t like me previously.
“If our system is like the Arabs we won’t be able to speak today. We don’t support actions that involve murdering government critics,” Dr Mahathir told a forum organised by Sinar Harian today when he replied to questions about Khashoggi’s death this month.
Khashoggi, a vocal critic of the Saudi royal family, was last seen alive entering the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul on October 2.
The forum, held in Shah Alam, was moderated by veteran journalist and former Media Prima chairman Johan Jaafar.
Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir has been quoted in media reports as saying that Khashoggi was killed in a brawl inside the consulate and denying that the murder was ordered by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
There’s been global outrage over the murder, and the US, UK, France and the Netherlands have all announced a boycott of the Future Investment Initiative (FII) conference in Saudi Arabia next week. – October 22, 2018.
