TWO-THIRDS of civil servants earn salaries of less than RM5,000, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Liew Vui Keong told the Dewan Rakyat today.

He said these comprised 886,270, or 76%, of the government’s 1,146,222 civil servants.

Those who earned less than the amount were in Grade 44 and below, he added.

He said the figures were as at June 30, according to the Accountant-General, and included those in the police force.

However, Liew said fixed incentives and other allowances civil servants received according to their grades and salary schemes were not included.

“If we take into account fixed incentives and monthly allowances… then the number (of those earning less than RM5,000) will drop to 742,5612, or 65%, of civil servants,” he said.

Liew was answering Mansor Othman (PKR-Nibong Tebal), who had asked the prime minister to state the number of government officers earning less than RM5,000 a month and the measures taken to help reduce their cost of living burden. – October 22, 2018.
