Constitutional changes needed to apply term limit for chief minister, says Abang Johari

SABAH and Sarawak need to amend their state constitutions to apply Pakatan Harapan’s proposal to limit the chief minister’s term of office, the Borneo Post reports.

Until that was accomplished, the term limit could not be introduced in the two states, said the report quoting Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg.

“It’s because we are autonomous,” he said.

PH has proposed that the prime minister, menteris besar and chief ministers be limited to two terms of service.

The proposal is on the PH election manifesto, and it was reiterated by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad when tabling the mid-term review of the 11th Malaysia Plan in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday.

Abang Johari said Sarawak had autonomy over the appointment and terms of its ministers.

But he said he would consult leaders of other political parties in the state before tabling an amendment to the state constitution.

“I have to discuss this with all the political parties, get their views first,” he was quoted as saying.

The Sarawak government is led by Gabungan Parti Sarawak, a coalition made up of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu, Sarawak United Peoples’ Party, Parti Rakyat Sarawak, and Progressive Democratic Party. – October 20, 2018.
