MALAYSIAN Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) would only investigate a person’s wealth if there is basis to suspect that the wealth was attained through corruption and power abuse, sais MACC chief commissioner Datuk Dzulkifli Ahmad.

He said the amount of money a person has is not basis for the a corruption investigation.

“The issue is whether the wealth is accumulated through corruption and abuse of power… that basis must be there for the commission to investigate.

“People can be rich, but it is important that we look at the source of the the wealth because if it is (gained) through corruption and abuse of power, then it will become the MACC’s responsibility to investigate,” he said in response to whether the MACC will investigate Deputy Prime Minister Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s allegedly excessive wealth.

Dzulkifli was speaking after receiving a courtesy call from PAS deputy presidentTuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and Parti Ikatan Bangsa Malaysia (Ikatan) president Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir at his office today.

Pakatan Harapan chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad had recently claimed that Zahid had RM230 million in his bank account in 1996,  and DAP subsequently filed a police report to prompt law enforcers to investigate the claim.

Dzulkifli, however, said Dr Mahathir’s statement, without supporting evidence, was not enough reason for MACC to initiate an investigation. – Bernama, August 11, 2017.
