UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) this afternoon and is expected to face charges related to a charitable organisation which he chairs tomorrow.

MACC in a statement said the former deputy prime minister will face charges relating to abuse of power, money laundering and criminal breach of trust.

The Bagan Datoh MP will be charged under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

The statement also said that the Attorney-General’s Chambers had consented to the charges.

Zahid was arrested at 3.15pm. This is the sixth time that he has appeared before the MACC since July.

He is believed to have been questioned in relation to a family-run charitable foundation, Yayasan Akal Budi, which he chairs.

It was reported that he was investigated over claims that RM800,000 from the foundation was used to pay off his and his wife’s credit card bills.

A group of about 40 supporters had gathered outside the MACC building this afternoon to show solidarity for the Umno president.

Also present were his wife Hamidah Khamis and daughter Nurulhidayah.

Zahid will be held overnight at the MACC headquarters and will be taken to the Kuala Lumpur sessions court at 8am tomorrow to be charged. – October 18, 2018.
