SINGAPORE plans to retain the Causeway connecting Johor and the island city for the next 30 years, said Najib Razak today.
He said he was informed of this when he discussed with the Singapore government regarding the matter during his time as prime minister.
He had also proposed to Singapore to demolish the Causeway to allow development of a new bridge.
Yesterday, Johor Menteri Besar Osman Sapian said the crooked bridge linking the two countries may be revived.
The project was mooted by Dr Mahathir Mohamad before he retired as the prime minister in 2003.
However, Singapore did not agree to the project as it refused to demolish its half of the Causeway, which led to Dr Mahathir announcing his plans to build the crooked bridge.
Najib (Pekan-BN) said it would look “weird” if half of the bridge is new while the other half is old.
He said the project was cancelled under Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s administration and a compensation paid to the contractor.
“The question now is whether the crooked bridge would benefit the people. That is what we should judge,” said Najib. – October 17, 2018.
