Ministry in talks with stakeholders on colour of school socks

Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik, pushing for a switch to black school shoes, earlier this year said the time students would spend on cleaning dirty white shoes could, instead, be used for reading. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, October 15, 2018.

THE Education Ministry will decide on the colour of school socks after discussions with stakeholders, reported Utusan Online.

The portal quoted Minister Dr Maszlee Malik as saying the talks are to ensure the best solution is reached.

“We will issue a statement after the discussions are done,” he told reporters after a visit to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre.

Yesterday, Bumiputera Retailers’ Organisation vice-president Ameer Ali Mydin asked the ministry to clarify whether primary and secondary school students would be allowed to wear black socks next year.

It followed the ministry’s announcement on Saturday that its black school shoes ruling will be postponed to 2021, after plans to have it come into effect next year were met with resistance.

The ministry said the decision was made after it received feedback from parent-teacher associations, students and suppliers of school shoes.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Maszlee said the time students would spend on cleaning dirty white shoes every week could, instead, be used for reading. – October 15, 2018.

  • This is one policy that i feel is a waste of time to discuss or even implemented. We should be looking at revamping the education system, not talking about color of shoes and socks.

  • Has it occurred to anyone that mosquitos are attracted to black coloured objects? Think about that before changing the school sock colour.

  • UMNO-BN-MALAYS DESTROYED THE GOOD ENGLISH-BASED EDUCATION SYSTEM WE HAD AFTER MERDEKA IN 1957, AFTER WHICH THE UNFORTUNATE MALAYS (ESPECIALLY) DECLINED VERY BADLY. We need to revisit English again to uplift the Malays & restore them EDUCATIONALLY..

    • EDUCATION IN ENGLISH ALLOWS MALAYSIANS OF EVERY RACE TO THINK CLEARLY & ADVANCE. Don't we want that?..

    • WAY BACK IN THE MID-196O's my best friends in upper secondary school were 2 Malay boys who were proficient in good English & were able to be in the coveted Science stream. AND SO YOU CAN SEE THAT I SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE, THAT A GOOD COMMAND OF ENGLISH CAN UPLIFT & ADVANCE THE MALAYS IN A WAY THAT UMNO's way of just giving money to Malays CANNOT Money helps them eat rich food, grow obese, fall sick, and die faster (painfully!)..
