ANWAR Ibrahim’s intentions for the Port Dickson by-election is not to create more enemies, but to save the country’s future.
He said this when addressing his relationship with Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who once sacked him from his post as deputy prime minister.
“We had a common ground, which was to fight for the people to improve the economy.
“The relationship was strengthened by the shared ideals to save the country,” he said.
Anwar spoke to a crowd of about 200 people, some of whom stood under the rain to greet the Port Dickson by-election candidate by chanting “Reformasi!” and “hidup-hidup, hidup Anwar” at his campaign’s finale.
Anwar spoke on the needs of the ordinary citizens by addressing the disparity between big corporations and rural villagers in Malaysia.
“While we are expanding infrastructure, we cannot forget those from the lower income groups,” he said.
“We cannot forget that development must be fair to all citizens.” the PKR de-facto leader said.
He also said there are plans to bring investors to Port Dickson for more development, which will, in turn, create jobs for army and police veterans.
Anwar then spoke of unity amongst the people of Port Dickson regardless of their different backgrounds.
He refuted claims of how his visits to Hindu and Buddhist temples was disrespectful to Islam, but it merely shows respect to others as he was not there to worship other religions.
Anwar reminded the crowd of the troubles faced by the country and how the current situation developed as former ministers had “robbed” the country.
“We don’t have money because previously we had ministers who stole the people’s money,” he said.
His only promise to the crowd was that reformist approach wasn’t weighed with empty promises, but he said he will do his best to bring growth to Port Dickson.
He concluded his speech in Kg Sawah by urging voters to start the voting process early and asked them to bring their family members.
He also asked visitors to the beach-side town to stay indoors to avoid creating traffic congestion.
“We give a priority to the local voters and not to interfere with the access of the voters,” he said. – October 12, 2018.
