THE Perseids meteor shower will be visible against the Malaysian night sky about 12.30am on Saturday, said the National Space Agency.

Generally, about 60 to 100 meteors will be viewable an hour, but areas free of light pollution may show up to 150 meteors an hour during the phenomenon, said NSA.

“However, the waning gibbous moon will make it a challenge to see the meteor shower clearly,” it said, adding that the moon was expected to rise at 10.16pm on Friday.

The Perseids meteor shower occurs between July 17 and August 24 annually, when the Earth passes through debris and dust of the 109P/Swift-Tuttle comet. The Perseids, one of the brightest meteorite swarms, consist of a multitude of stellar particles, which due to their high speed glow and burn up upon entering Earth’s atmosphere. – Bernama, August 10, 2017.
