ANTHONY Loke is reviewing the operations of the KL Monorail after a drop in ridership.

The Transport Minister said the average ridership fell from 71,943 in 2015 to 48,748 in 2017.

He said part of the decline was due to a shortage of train sets.

“We have only five sets of two-car trains operating at the moment and this has caused the frequency of the service to be very irregular,” he said after a site visit to the monorail depot in Kuala Lumpur today.

He noted that five sets of four-car trains have been grounded since January 2018 due to safety issues.

Loke said he was considering asking train supplier Scomi Engineering Berhad, which is locked in a contract dispute with Prasarana, to repair the trains.

The minister said a paper on the matter will be tabled to the cabinet. – October 9, 2018.
