THE remains of well-known Islamic scholar Hassan Azhari were buried at the Shah Alam Royal Mausoleum about 9.40am today.

Present were Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari, state police chief Mazlan Mansor, family members and friends.

Earlier, funeral prayers were held at Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque in Shah Alam, led by Hassan’s son, Associate Professor Dr Abdul Rauf.

Hassan, 90, died of lymphoma about 5pm yesterday at Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

The father of 22 children from three wives, Hassan was a prominent Quran teacher on the popular Muqaddam religious programme on RTM in the 1970s. The programme ran for eight years.

When the country attained independence on August 31, 1957, he was given the honour of reciting the “azan” (call to prayer).

Three of Hassan’s sons are well-known figures in their respective fields, namely former inspector-general of police Musa Hassan, former Special Affairs Division director Fuad Hassan, who died in December 2014, and actor Jalaluddin Hassan.

Musa said his father had wished to be buried in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, but this was not to be due to his ill health.

“He was born in Mecca, and many of his relatives are there.”

Musa, who is Hassan’s eldest child, thanked all those who offered prayers and attended his father’s funeral.

Jalaluddin said he will never forget his father’s early objections to him joining the entertainment industry.

“However, he changed his mind and gave his blessings after seeing that I was serious about pursuing a career in the industry, to support my family.

“I was able to show him that acting is a talent given by Allah for me to use, to support my family, and finally, he accepted.” – Bernama, October 7, 2018.
