MOHD Saiful Bukhari Azlan last night insisted that his sodomy accusation against the PKR president-elect is true.
The independent candidate, during a ceramah in Kg Teluk Pelanduk attended by a handful of people, said this is the reason he is running in the Port Dickson by-election.
“It really did happen. If it hadn’t, I wouldn’t be standing here,” he said, responding to a resident’s question on whether there was truth to the case that saw Anwar Ibrahim jailed.
In his first comments on the matter on his campaign trail, Saiful said he had sworn on the truth of his claim and lodged a police report, while Anwar had not.
He first swore on the matter at the Federal Territory Mosque in 2008, and some years later, in front of the Kaabah in Mecca.
“Anwar received a royal pardon. This means he was guilty, as the pardon was issued for the crime,” said Saiful.
On nomination day, the former aide to Anwar had promised not to bring up the matter during his campaign.
His 2008 accusation that he was sodomised by his ex-boss saw Anwar dragged to court and sentenced to five years behind bars.
Anwar received a royal pardon on May 16, a week after Pakatan Harapan won federal power in the 14th general election.
The 71-year-old is contesting the Port Dickson by-election in an attempt to return to Parliament, before he takes over from Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister.
Dr Mahathir, 93, yesterday promised that he will retire when he turns 95.
Also vying to be Port Dickson MP are air force veteran Mohd Nazari Mokhtar of PAS and former Negri Sembilan menteri besar Isa Samad, who is contesting as an independent.
Lau Seck Yan, Stevie Chan and Kan Chee Yuen – all independents – make it a seven-cornered fight.
The by-election was called after Danyal Balagopal Abdullah, of PKR, quit as MP on September 12 to make way for Anwar to contest.
Danyal won the seat in GE14 with 36,225 votes, beating Barisan Nasional’s Mogan Velayatham and Mahfuz Roslan of PAS.
The Port Dickson polls will be held on Saturday. – October 7, 2018.
