INDEPENDENT candidate Saiful Bukhari Azlan has only managed to collect RM1,565.11 to fund his bid against his former boss Anwar Ibrahim in the Port Dickson by-election.
He said this was the amount collected as of last night, since launching his donation drive on Tuesday.
Saiful has insisted that no one is behind his bid for the federal seat which was vacated by the PKR incumbent for Anwar to re-enter Parliament.
“It is all about the rakyat wanting to invest in making political change in Malaysia as people are frustrated with political parties,” he told The Malaysian Insight.
Anwar, whom Saiful accused of sodomising him in 2008, is next in line to become prime minister, succeeding Dr Mahathir Mohamad. The by-election has been called a “forced” and “manufactured” one, and Saiful as well as other independent candidates have said they are contesting to protest a culture of political “entitlement”.
Saiful said he will use the funds collected to print his posters, flags and other campaign material.
The 33-year-old’s sodomy allegations landed Anwar a five-year jail sentence in 2015, and he was serving it up till his release with a full pardon by the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong in May this year, after Pakatan Harapan won the general election.
Since his sodomy claims, Saiful and his wife Nik Suryani Megat Deraman have started their own business in a clothing line and a consultancy firm.
Saiful, who was also linked to former prime minister Najib Razak prior to Anwar’s sodomy trial, is also a regular attendee at Umno annual general assemblies.
In a ceramah speech in the by-election recently, he said Anwar was unqualified as a national leader, calling him a terrible manager who was “only good at talking”.
The Port Dickson by-election will be held next Saturday with seven candidates contesting the federal seat which has 75,770 registered voters.
Besides Anwar and Saiful, others are independents Stevie Chan, Lai Seck Yan, Kan Chee Yuen and PAS’ Nazari Mokhtar. – October 4, 2018.
