DEFENCE Minister Mohamad Sabu has called on the Port Dickson electorate to give Pakatan Harapan candidate Anwar Ibrahim a huge majority in the October 13 by-election.

He said the previous three by-elections held after the May 9 general election saw a low voter turnout, with Seri Setia recording 44.1%, Sg Kandis (49.4%) and Balakong (43%).

Mohamad, better known as Mat Sabu, said he is confident that Anwar will win Port Dickson, but stressed that the PKR president-elect should win with a huge majority.

“Do we want the prime minister in-waiting to win with a small majority?

“We want to win with a big majority on October 13,” he said at a ceramah in the parliamentary constituency last night.

In the 14th general election, Danyal Balagopal Abdullah of PKR received 36,225 votes to win the seat. He defeated Barisan Nasional’s Mogan Velayatham and Mahfuz Roslan of PAS, who got 18,515 and 6,594 votes, respectively.

Danyal quit as MP to make way for Anwar, who is eyeing a return to Parliament before he replaces Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister.

The Port Dickson polls will see a seven-cornered fight. The other candidates are air force veteran Mohd Nazari Mokhtar of PAS, and independents Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, a former aide to Anwar; former Negri Sembilan MB Isa Samad; Lau Seck Yan; Stevie Chan; and, Kan Chee Yuen.

Earlier yesterday, PH urged outstation voters to return to Port Dickson and cast their ballots.

Danyal said there is a concern that constituents believe Anwar will win even without their votes.

He said the message he got from locals during his door-to-door visits was that outstation voters do not intend to come back to Port Dickson for polling day. – October 4, 2018.
