EC lodged police report over Najib, not us, says Bersih

BERSIH 2.0 did not lodge any police report over alleged offences by former prime minister Najib Razak in the Sg Kandis by-election, the elections reforms group said today.

It said it had only lodged a report with the Election Commission about Najib’s Facebook post on polling day for the by-election on August 4, urging voters to choose the Barisan Nasional candidate.

“The EC, in turn, had lodged a police report on the case, which we believe led to the investigation into Najib,” Bersih said in a statement.

Bersih was responding to Najib, who had challenged the group to state whether it had also lodged police reports against other parties contesting the Sg Kandis by-election for alleged offences.

Bersih said it had reported offences committed by the PKR candidate to the EC as well, but noted that it was up to the commission to take further action.

It urged the EC to look into all complaints of election offices submitted, including by the public.

“(All) should be investigated to ensure free and fair elections,” it said. – October 2, 2018.
