IN response to Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s allegations against his “extraordinary” wealth, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today said he is corruption-free.
Zahid, who is also home minister, said even though avoiding elements of corruption could be difficult, it was not impossible.
“The Home Ministry and the agencies under it, and I, are free of corruption,” he said in his speech at the Anti-Corruption Pledge event at the Immigration Department in Putrajaya.
“It’s not easy. But, it can be done if we hold ourselves to a high standard.”
Last week, Dr Mahathir said Zahid had failed to give a clear answer when questioned over the RM230 million he allegedly had in his account when he was Umno Youth chief in 1996.
Zahid said the money was from his involvement in the corporate world before he joined politics.
He said it was most important for civil servants to have good intentions.
“We must start with ourselves. What’s more, for the Immigration Department, the public are the stakeholders.”
He lauded the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission for stepping up its operations of late.
“Congratulations to MACC. Even ‘whales’ have been netted,” he said, referencing previous claims that the agency only went after “small fry”.
“Every day, those arrested by the commission are brought to court.
“This increases confidence in MACC and quashes negative perceptions of the commission.” – August 8, 2017.
