THERE is no need for Umno to cooperate with any party to form a unity government if the party is just going to be a passenger, said Mohamad Hasan.
The deputy president said Umno must strive to regain Putrajaya on its own, and not depend on the goodwill of others.
“Do not dream that people will come bearing ‘tepak sirih’ (traditional Malay ceremonial gift) with an offer to form the government,” he said in his winding-up speech at the party’s general assembly today.
The former Negri Sembilan menteri besar said a pact that leaves Umno as a passenger is pointless.
“If we are to ride as a passenger, then forget it.”
He said the party can win back support as it has six decades’ experience in the government and serving the people.
“But because of a slight fall, the kingdom has collapsed. We must work hard to win back support.”

He admitted that it is difficult to persuade Malays who had rejected Umno in the 14th general election to return to the party’s fold.
Although president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi yesterday proposed seven policies, invoving 21 steps, to reset the party’s direction, Mohamad said it is more important for Umno to persuade Malays to support it once more.
“We change what we ought to change, so that we do not repeat (our mistakes) again.”
He said Umno does not need to “waste time” debating with the Pakatan Harapan government and its supporters, as they are still in the honeymoon period.
“When (those in power) see that the prices of goods continue to soar, the country’s economy is tanking… I do not see good economic growth for the third and fourth quarters of the year, and many people may lose their jobs.
“That is when we will say, ‘you made the wrong choice’.” – September 30, 2018.
