DOES Umno want to be an opposition party or does it hope to form a unity government with a Pakatan Harapan component party?

Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin posed the question yesterday night after the opening of the party’s annual general assembly at the PWTC, Kuala Lumpur.

The Rembau MP said the Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had failed to make the party direction clear in his policy speech at the event.

“He said we want to fight PH but after that (he) made remarks about forming a unity government.

“You have to be clear when you are leading the party. You can’t say you want to cooperate and then say you want to fight. ‘Zalim-lah’ (That’s wicked),” he said.

Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan demurred, saying anything was possible in politics .

“We want to be a critical opposition but why should we refuse if there is an offer to form a unity government?” he said.

Mohamad said Zahid’s speech was clear, if one had paid attention and understood the party policy.

“We have said in the opening speech that we have two main focuses – one, to strengthen the party and two, to prepare our strategy to win the 15th general election.”

The Youth wing, meanwhile, rejected suggestions to form a unity government with a PH component party as a means of returning to power, following reports quoting Zahid saying Umno was open to forming a unity government with PKR before or after president Anwar Ibrahim became prime minister.

Youth chief Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said Umno did not need help from others to become the government through the “back door”.

“We should not sell our dignity just to become the government, and in the end, be rejected by the people in the next general election,” he told a press conference at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur, yesterday. –  September 30, 2018.

    • And Asyraf is the one who says he will cooperate with PAS or anyone for the same agenda on race and religion, and then he says UMNO should not sell dignity by going back door.

  • There might be a pig trying to fly in Port Dickson. Voters should think carefully.
