FORMER Port Dickson lawmaker Danyal Balagopal Abdullah has threatened to sue those alleging that he was paid RM25 million to vacate his parliamentary seat.

Danyal, who has come under fire for making way for PKR’s president-elect Anwar Ibrahim, said there are quarters out there who have tarnished his name, painting him to be a corrupt veteran.

“I am known as a very forgiving person, but I will not allow anyone to take advantage of this by slandering me like this,” he told reporters at the Pakatan Harapan operations centre in Port Dickson this evening.

“I will seek legal counsel and will not hesitate to take action against these people.”

Early last month, a statement purportedly issued by the National Patriots Association (Patriots) president Mohamed Arshad Raji which alleged the RM25 million bribe went viral on social media.

However, Patriot communications director Wong Ang Peng denied ever issuing such a statement.

Danyal today reiterated that he had not been forced by anyone to give up his seat for Anwar.

“It was my initiative to quit. Nobody forced me to give it up. I gave up my seat willingly. My only condition was that I be allowed to serve Anwar as one of his assistants in Port Dickson,” he said.

Nomination for the Port Dickson by-election is tomorrow. The contest will most likely see a multi-cornered fight, with Anwar of ruling coalition Pakatan Harapan facing challenges from former Negri Sembilan menteri besar Isa Samad, an air force veteran from PAS, Mohd Nazari Mokhtar, a Parti Rakyat Malaysia candidate and independent Stevie Chan Keng Leng.

PKR has held the seat since 2008, when it was still known as Teluk Kemang. The seat was renamed Port Dickson after a redelineation exercise before the last general election.

In the 14th general election in May, Danyal won the seat with 36,225 votes, beating BN’s MIC candidate V. Mogan, who got 18,515 votes, and PAS’ Mahfuz Roslan, who received 6,594 votes. – September 28, 2018.
