Beware the 'super liberals', Anwar says of PD move critics

PKR president-elect Anwar Ibrahim has hit out at “super liberals” he said were attacking him for engineering the Port Dickson by-election.

He said this group talked about national issues without regard for others’ views as if they “owned the country”.

“They say that I cannot be trusted. This is the liberal group that thinks I’m too Malay and too Islamic.

“If, to be a Malaysian leader you cannot be Malay, cannot be Muslim, that is being really mischievous,” he said during a question and answer session after delivering a lecture at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) today.

The Port Dickson by-election is meant to help Anwar re-enter Parliament as part of succession plans to take over from Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister. All Pakatan Harapan parties have agreed that Anwar will be the next prime minister.

The Port Dickson incumbent, PKR’s Danyal Balagopal Abdullah had vacated the seat to allow Anwar to contest.

The move has drawn criticism from some observers. An independent, Stevie Chan, is contesting Anwar on grounds that by-elections should not be manufactured for political agendas.

Anwar said these “super-liberals” thought everyone else had to follow their views.

“They discuss issues as if they own the country, when they are criticised they attack us as if they own the country.

“They think their way must be followed, that there can be no other views,” he said.

Anwar did not name who or which groups he described as “super-liberal”.

Chan, however, in recent days has been using his social media platforms to explain his opposition to the “Port Dickson Move”.

He said a forced by-election is undemocratic and that there was no urgent need for the by-election as Anwar was only due to succeed Dr Mahathir in about two years’ time.

He also said the by-election came too soon after the general election as the new government was trying to settle down; and that Anwar could have chosen to contest in the seats held by his wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail or daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar to avoid nepotism. – September 25, 2018.

  • Chan has a valid point, Anwar. You are slated to take over as PM from Mahathir in two years. If you have a by-election then, very few, if any, would question the morality of it. As it stands now, all the dectrators see in PD Move is an impatient man. Who, it appears, did not learn what being impatient cost him back in 1998.

    • How can he be PM if not get elected now? what happen if Mahathir suddenly gone. Who take up the Post? Wan Azizah? This is part of the deal. I don't want the uncertainty and watching Azmin cutting queue. You guys really unaware of the undercurrent in PH political play.

    • If Tun dies before 2 yrs is up, there you have a *valid* reason for a by election - the MP dies.

      Also, if by the time Tun is supposed to handover & he didn't, I will even take annual leave and go down the streets to protest against Tun. And I don't think I will be the only one.

      As it is, we're talking about the critical need to spent government money prudently, our PM & Co flying here & there to get loans & re-negotiate signs agreements, then now we hear Anwar is going to waste 3.6 million just so he can be an MP.

      BTW, that MP that stepped down for him will most likely not be in GE15 unless he wanna go for state seat. Even then, would you trust someone who betray your vote? Susah2 apply leave, berebut beli ticket bas/kepal terbang, some even share rides utk pulang mengundi, semua tuh buang dlm longkang. Nah! Pengundi PD, bagi Anwar & Co, itu lah nilai undi awak semua!!!!

  • I too am concerned about extreme liberalism. Just like US, it ended up badly for the liberal cause. Do not push much to the left, you will end up having old Malaysia.

    • What do you understand by Anwar in his statement of extreme liberalism ????? Beats me !!! i am yet to see anyone in Malaysia as such nature. Even DAP or even Umno with some of their MPs who are being very fair minded do not even reveal a trace of right leaning liberals. Talking about liberalism ain't Anwar with his reformasi cries are of the fire brand liberals in thinking. What rubbish is Anwar rambling. He is always using projections to cover his intended actions and that is his obssesions being a PM and not a second late to spare. He knows that the forced by elections is all wrong and getting a newbie to vacate the seat for him is totally view with disdain by rakyat. It is an uncalled and unwarranted actions which cud be done at a much later stage. It is further viewed that it is morally wrong on why did'nt he insist that either one of his two ladies in the family offered their seat to him. Using Mahatit old age and heatlh is a very filmsy excuse as right now his wife is the DPM. With that in place does it stop the process of him to be a PM. He is too sure and think too highly of himself which is a symptom of a dictator in the making. Nobody is stoping him being a Malay or a muslim. Did anybody scolded Mahatir bein a Malay or a Muslim. His reasoning is very weak and especially using this both pointers reveal a tendency in being racist and shit stirring. Seditius attempt. !!!!!!!!!!!! I was his strong followes for once but now after all his antics, will not believe or vote for him to be a PM. He has forgotten and his period of incarceration did not educate him much on being dignified in character but instead like a caged rat on release becomes pestiferous.

    • Saddam Hussein in waiting. He will be worst than Najib. AA, Zuridah, Lim Guan Eng, Sadique, Mat Dabu and a few more ministers will be chopped as ministers. A lot of problems will be caused by him. Just watch and see
