THE police should adhere to the Child Act to ensure that the rights of the late Cradle Fund CEO’s teenage stepsons, who have been remanded, are protected, says Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Hannah Yeoh.

She was commenting on a photo circulating in social media showing the boys in handcuffs.

“We understand this is a crime case but these two are still kids. Our ministry wants to ensure that their rights are protected and they have the same rights as others.

“We must also ensure that their identities are protected in the process,” she told reporters on the sidelines of the “Sensory Photography” exhibition held in Kuala Lumpur today.

She said the government must also follow the Act and ensure that what is stated in the Act is followed.

Yeoh also expressed disappointment over the emergence of the photo on social media and urged the public to protect the children’s rights.

“You must remember they are not guilty as of now so let the process take place.

“We must ensure that their faces are not shown to protect their identities. One of them is only 14 years old,” she said.

On Saturday, the two teenage stepsons of the late Cradle Fund chief executive officer Nazrin Hassan were remanded for seven days in connection with his murder.

The boys, aged 16 and 14 years old, were arrested at 4pm at their grandfather’s house in Taman Tun Dr Ismail in Kuala Lumpur.

Meanwhile, on the matter of Deputy Home Minister Azis Jamman’s aide who was sacked after being accused of filming an upskirt video of an optician, Yeoh said the police should investigate and update the public on the matter.

She said the Home Ministry had acted very quickly and showed that they viewed it as a serious incident.

“So, the deputy home minister had acted and issued a statement that they have removed him from that position. I think a police report has been lodged by the victim and we want the police to investigate and update the public,” said Yeoh.

It was reported that the police have arrested a 47-year-old man to assist with the investigation.

Kuala Lumpur police chief commissioner Mazlan Lazim said the suspect was picked up at 1pm today at a restaurant in the city. – September 10, 2018.
