THE registration of political parties should not fall under the purview of the Registrar of Societies (RoS), said Election Reforms Committee chairman Abdul Rashid Abd Rahman.

The function should instead come under the Election Commission (EC), he told reporters today.

“When they have the power to register, they will also have the power to control.

“So, we are looking into this. There is a possibility we will take away the power from the RoS,” said Rashid.

He said the move was part of a larger plan to draft better and more suitable laws to register and monitor political bodies or parties qualified to participate in elections or activities related to it. – August 29, 2018.

  • A very valid point. For too long the government has controlled the fate of political parties through the ROS and it has been very unfair all along. This decoupling will ensure a more level battleground.
