PRIME Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad needs to keep the Council of Eminent Persons around as many issues still need looking into, said Azmin Ali.

The economic affairs minister said the council’s function was to study and look into issues, then submit its recommendations to the cabinet.

“I think he (Dr Mahathir) clearly said it needs more time, because there were so many issues when we took over Putrajaya. He needs more time to study the reports,” he said in the Parliament lobby today.

Azmin also said the cabinet was fully functional and did not necessarily need to follow the council’s recommendations on matters.

“The council will give recommendations to the government. It is not necessary that we agree with their recommendations.

“All the recommendations will go to the cabinet to deliberate and discuss.”

Dr Mahathir said today the council will not end after Pakatan Harapan’s 100 days in power as their services are still needed. – August 16, 2018.

  • Like how we used to have a Commissioner for Law Reform to oversee legal reforms. Similarly CEP can perform a useful role..

  • I do agreed on the grounds that Mahatir needs lots of advisors at this juncture. Do not forget Mahatir is no more a young chicken. He needs every little help possible for him to be on top of situation. All the generals, captains , lieutenant and foot soldiers are what will make it tick. I doubt he has any conniving intentions but he still hunger for attentions and self aggrandization and a wonderful piece of epitaph when the time comes!!!
