Retract statement on lesbian caning sentence, PAS tells Suhakam

PAS has urged the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) to retract its statement slamming the Terengganu shariah court’s decision to cane two participants of lesbian sex.

The Islamist party’s secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said Suhakam’s statement was in contempt of the court verdict.

“We reject and condemn the actions of Suhakam chief who is in contempt of court in Terengganu over the lesbian issue,” he told reporters in Parliament today.

Takiyuddin said caning was not torture as it was in accordance to shariah laws.

“The court imposed whipping of six times but it is under the shariah canning. We disagree with the Suhakam chairman who said it was torture, cruel and degrading,” he added.

The Kota Baru lawmaker also said if Suhakam does not clarify its statement, PAS would be mooting legal action against the commission.

“We are contemplating legal proceeding if he does not respond. We are seeking legal advice,” Takiyuddin said.

Two women aged 22 and 32, were sentenced to six strokes of the cane each and fined RM3,300 for having homosexual relations.

They were tried on Sunday before the shariah court and confessed to breaking an Islamic law that forbids same sex copulation.

Suhakam chairman Razali Ismail said the court decision was “humiliating, demeaning and an attempt to publicly embarrass the women and their families.” – August 16, 2018.

  • I dont believe there is a crime called contempt of court verdict. There is however a crime which forbids infringement of freedom of speech. The days of simply accepting everything without question are gone. PAS is in danger of splitting the country into two. That is a serious threat to harmony.
