LIEW Chin Tong has slammed PKR deputy president hopeful Rafizi Ramli for creating a ruckus over the RM800,000 raised by Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu’s aide.
He said Rafizi could have sought clarification about the money raised to clear the aide’s bankruptcy debts instead of turning to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
“I feel no need for Rafizi to blow things out of proportion. Rafizi is one phone call away from us.
The aide allegedly received the money from various parties to settle his bankrupt status, which was only lifted in late May, after Pakatan Harapan won the general election earlier that month.
Liew added the money raised by the aide was from his family and friends, which was well known fact in the ministry.
“I know the person for six years. We have been working closely. I know that he was bankrupt. In order for the appointment, some of us friends and his family tried to help him.
“In order to clear the bankruptcy to be eligible to work. There is no hanky panky,” he said.
The DAP strategist also reiterated what Mohamad or better known as Mat Sabu said by allowing the MACC to investigate fully to clear the aide of the charges.
“MACC will investigate as soon as possible and whether to charge him or not or whether to clear him. I think this case shouldn’t be blown out of proportion,” Liew said.
Mat Sabu said he would cooperate with the graft body to clear charges.
News reports on his aide quoted sources as saying that payments to the individual were made a few days after Mohamad, who is Amanah president, took office as defence minister on May 22.
MACC has recorded the aide’s statement as well as statements from 10 others, including defence contractors and businessmen.
However, Rafizi claimed the aide raised more than RM800,000 and there were dubious payments that he had obtained records off. – August 16, 2018.
