WANTED businessman Low Taek Jho must be accountable if superyacht Equanimity was purchased with illegal funds, said Najib Razak.
The former prime minister said he had always held that his former associate, also known as Jho Low, should be made responsible if the money was siphoned from 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
“I said if it was done illegally – if the yacht was obtained in a manner that is illegal, in the sense that money that was not due to him had been used, as alleged – then he has to be accountable for it.
“That has always been my position,” Najib said when stopped at the Parliament lobby today.
Najib, who had also been finance minister, had started 1MDB with Low’s help and oversaw it as chairman of the state investor’s advisory board.
The former Umno president has denied any wrongdoing with regards to 1MDB and also of Equanimity.
Low, who previously denied owning the yacht, recently spoke through his lawyers to protest Malaysia’s move to take possession of the yacht from Indonesia, where it was seized.
“I don’t want to say anything, it is up to him. We are not involved with respect to the yacht at all,” Najib said.
Najib is facing seven charges over 1MDB involving fund transfers from its former subsidiary, SRC International Sdn Bhd.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad earlier this week said the US Department of Justice’s filings to forfeit the yacht had shown that Low had bought the yacht using 1MDB funds, which belonged to Malaysian taxpayers.
Malaysia received the yacht from Indonesia on Monday, following an agreement between Dr Mahathir and President Jokowi Widodo. – August 13, 2018.
