FORMER prime minister Najib Razak today disputed a claim by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad that he (Najib) had given out money “freely” during his administration, which Malaysians have become very used too.
Najib instead said the Barisan Nasional government had benefited from initiatives like the goods and services tax (GST), so much so that money could be given back to the people.
“When the government revenue increased, we gave back to the citizens who needed it,” added the Pekan MP.
The former Umno president said Dr Mahathir’s claim that the Pakatan Harapan government did not have money was just an excuse.
“The (BN) government’s debt of 50.8% compared to the gross domestic product was not high as 80% to 103.4% during Dr Mahathir’s era as prime minister previously,” Najib said.
He reiterated that the government’s revenue from GST was RM27 billion in 2015 and it grew to RM44 billion last year.
Najib added that GST was a transparent tax which worked on higher taxation for bigger purchases unlike the new sales and services tax, which replaces GST.
“We have collected a lot of money from rich people who spend more under GST compared to the poor people who had a lot of exemption. That is why the GST collection is more compared to the SST,” he said.
Dr Mahathir earlier today said Malaysians have come to expect free money as that was practised during Najib’s time in power.
The 93-year-old stressed the current government did not have money to spend lavishly as it was focused on the debts that Najib’s administration purportedly caused. – August 12, 2018.
