Council of Eminent Persons Daim Zainuddin says BN's cabinet was filled with 'yes men' who were too focused on apple-polishing rather than running the country. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, August 11, 2018.

THE biggest mistake the previous Barisan Nasional (BN) government made was having too many “yes men” in the administration, said Daim Zainuddin.

The Council of Eminent Persons (CEP) chairman said there was too much apple-polishing, which left the leadership thinking everything was fine in government.

“The major problem was there were too many ‘yes men’ around. All were just apple polishing (ampu).

“We all knew the previous government was corrupt. The cabinet was completely useless. They were all yes men,” said Daim told students at the Malaysian Student Leaders Summit XII in Kuala Lumpur today.

The former finance minister said everyone was silent even though the whole world knew about the corruption that took place under the previous administration.

He added that the leaders should always prioritise the people instead of their own self.

Daim then thanked the people whom he claimed was “brave enough” to change the government in the recent 14th general election.

“Don’t allow the ‘rakyat’ to reject you. Always put priority to rakyat and nation, and not yourself,” he added.

  • At least now we have some minister that is courageous to voice out different opinion from the PM. Albeit not openly. Because, the PM sometimes retract his earlier statement.

  • Out of the inefficient BN's cremated ashes will come new growth & better things for the people, but some are long term or will take some time. Some will be faster. Dr. Mahathir opined things will be in better shape for GE15 due by 2023..

  • Let's see how good PH government will be. "Yes men" are all over be it in the government or private sector. Umno allows it to fester and right now PPBM and PKR are in fact spring off from Umno and not surprise that such DNAs are around as long as remnants of Umno are in any party. Even a well discipline party like DAP and Amanah are not 100% free of such "yes men" maladies but what matters most is the discipline and fairness in establishing a system that encourages the better person to lead. Right now PH should not just talk. UmnoBN is no more around for PH to keep on laying the blame. Expose as much as PH can but ensure that there are solutions to reslove even if it takes time but with positive outcome. PH should prioritise the economic well being of the rakyat and follow by very effective education system for all. Do not splah unneccessary expenses in wayward outlandish projects where it has no buyback for the rakyat like the national car. The future is technology and food. Malaysia has no first mover advantage in technology and due to heavy brain drain we need to look at where we are best suited and that is food technology. Malaysia also needs to be self sufficient in food supply and be an exporter of food products be it in agriculture or aquaculture. Institution which are completely incompetent should be dismantle and new set up or a revamp .
